Hog Hollow Guest House, Plettenberg Bay

If you have visited Hog Hollow near Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route in South Africa, you will know what I mean when I say that this guest house is completely unique and utterly charming. Hog Hollow is owned by the slightly eccentric Andy Fermor who has single handedly (but with a bit of help from his friends) made Hog Hollow a homely, pan African and luxurious getaway.

What strikes you about Hog Hollow is that the staff are well trained, well cared for and obviously enjoying their jobs. This is one of the few hotels in South Africa where the staff is the main reason that people keep going back. That and the stunning rooms of course.

All the suites at Hog Hollow are large and offer amazing views of the tropical forests and mountains. The newer rooms are set in the trees and offer complete privacy.

Kids are welcome at Hog Hollow and the duplex suites with a downstairs lounge that can be made up to sleep 2 children as well as an upstairs bedroom for the parents. Small children have seperate dining times giving parents time to relax in the evenings.

Sabi Sands Singita Lodge adds rooms

Ebony_01[1].jpg

Just met with Singita Private Game Reserve marketing manager Lew Rood who told me that Singita is in the process of adding more rooms to Singita Boulders and Singita Ebony. Each lodge will get two more rooms in the form of a two-bedroom suite. This means that for the first time you can take your children under 10 years to Singita. It also means that you can now have a completely private singita experience with a private chef and ranger.

If you are traveling to Singita with children under 10 years, you need to take this suite on a private basis so that the children don’t disturb other guests. This means that you need to pay R4500 extra per night for the private ranger, chef and host. It also means that you can go on game drives whenever suits you.

If you are four adults traveling together you can either take the suite on a private basis and pay the extra R4500 per night for the chef and ranger, or you can take the rooms on a normal basis and take your meals and game drives with the other Singita guests. This gives you complete flexibility on your safari.

Zanzibar Vacation - Ocean Paradise

 Ocean Paradise Ocean Paradise Hotel

Leigh Herringer and family went to Zanzibar where they stayed at my favorite hotel - the Ocean Paradise.

HI Lise I can’t believe we are back!! It was wonderful - had the most relaxing time and Ocean Paradise is 1000 times better than Blue Bay - we went and had a look at it and really were not mad about Blue Bay at all. We also managed to change our rooms at Ocean on the second day so we had much better ones down by the beach. We really had a good time at the hotel and went snorkeling at Mnemba - My husband did a day’s deep sea fishing too, which he loved although he wasn’t a lucky fisherman. Food was good too as you said, and I def think this is the nicest hotel we saw by a long shot.

One thing we didn’t know was that there was 25 dollars departure tax each - did you know that? It’s good info to know.

Anyway I’m sure my mum will email you as well but thanks for organising everything for us so efficiently and for getting us into the hotel- we had such a divine and special time and I can’t believe how fast it all went. At least we have great tans and now are off to the gym to work off all that food!

Many thanks

Leigh Herringer

Zambia - Wilderness Safaris

I am off to Zambia!!!! I have just been invited to join Wilderness Safaris on a trip to their new lodge Shumba Camp. I am so excited I am bouncing off the walls!

Shumba Camp is situated in the Kafue National Park, in the northern most bit, called Busanga Plains. This is one of Zambias most significant wetland resourses and (this is the most exciting bit) it is vertually untouched by humans. So I am going off to be an intrepid explorer…!

Wildlife in the area includes herds of zebra, hartebeest and buffalo which attracts loads of lions, leopards and wild dog. Apparently pride of lion as big as 20 strong.

I will keep you posted on the trip on Shumba Camp!

Self Catering Accommodation Cape Town

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

More and more people are asking for self catering accommodation in Cape Town. This is a fantastic way to keep prices within a reasonable budget while still getting the comfort of a 4 star hotel.

Our favorite self catering apartments are the ones at the Waterfront and De Waterkant Village. Here you get one and two bedroomed flats, modernly decorated and with all the bells and whistles. And for a superb price.

Now you can take your family of four to Cape Town for the amazing price of R1790 per night. And this in high season 2006/2007!
